SPCA asks that we temporarily help an animal in need by being a foster parent
Montreal, Quebec, August 12, 2004 – Every day the CSPCA of Montreal (the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) receives many animals in need of a home. In fulfilling its mission. The CSPCA’s role is to provide a safe and clean environment for these animals by placing them in loving homes. But life in the shelter can be hard on some animals. There are certain animals that must leave the CSPCA to be welcomed into a foster home which is a temporary shelter. The CSPCA needs help from the public to continue to welcome animals into their homes for a temporary recovery period.
The foster program makes a vital contribution to the actualization of the CSPCA’s mission: “It is thanks to the foster program that the Montreal SPCA has been able to maintain a 15% euthanasia rate - one of the lowest of all Canadian animal shelters. This is something we are very proud of and grateful to all those who participate in this important program. With the support of the public, we are indeed giving animals a second chance that they may not have otherwise had,” said Pierre Barnoti, Executive Director of the CSPCA. Examples of animals in need of foster care include - pregnant cats that need to deliver outside of the shelter, older pets that do not have much longer to live, hurt animals that need to rest and heal in a quiet environment and kittens that are too young to be adopted. “Being a foster parent is a great option for those wanting to help for a temporary period of time or not ready to commit to a pet for the long term,” continued Pierre Barnoti.
The Montreal SPCA was founded in 1869 making it the oldest humane society in Canada. Its mission is to protect animals against negligence, abuse and exploitation and to speak for those who cannot speak for themselves by ensuring their well-being. Raising public awareness and helping develop compassion for all living creatures is also part of its mandate. Every year, the Montreal and Laval SPCA find homes for over 10,000 animals, making them the shelters with the highest number of adoptions in North America.
